Tourmaline Jewelry – World of Gemstones
According to an Egyptian legend, tourmaline made a long journey up from the center of the Earth and, while doing so, passed over a rainbow. This caused tourmaline jewelry to assume all the colors of the rainbow. To this day, the tourmaline history stuck. This “gemstone of the rainbow” has one of the most diverse color spectrum of gemstones. The name tourmaline, in fact, comes from the Singhalese words ‘tura mali’ which means “stone with mixed colors.”
Tourmalines are mixed crystals of aluminium boron silicate with a changing and complex composition. Even the slightest changes in the composition can cause completely different colors. Gemologist say crystals of only one color are quite rare. However, depending on the angle from which you view tourmaline, the color may change or be more or less intense.
Tourmalines have a good hardness (7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale) and can vary greatly in price, depending on the color and quality. Be sure to shop with a qualified Schwanke Kasten Jewelers professional to be certain you are getting the quality tourmaline you are paying for.
