Spiritual Jewelry

Throughout world history, the power of minerals has been used for healing of the body, mind, soul, the aligning of chakras, and the observance of celestial movements, even to designate those in the hierarchy of a particular village or clan. In fact, spiritual jewelry has been used by meta-physicists, shamans, emperors and more throughout human history.

Spiritual Jewelry – The Origins

The first evidence of objects worn by humans was discovered in Monaco, a small principality inside France about 25,000 years ago. It was a necklace of fish bones and plant fiber. Historians are unsure what the purpose of this necklace was for.

Did this necklace signify the leader of a clan? A talisman to communicate with (or ward off) the spirits? Could it have been the designation of the fisherman of the group? We may never know.

Hunters typically wore bones, teeth, claws, and other parts of their kills as both trophies and for good fortune. Moreover, hunters were an integral – perhaps the integral part of a clan, for it was their very survival.

Middle Ages

In the dark and middle ages, as the esoteric began to fill human minds in answer to the question, “why?” Humans have worn jewelry to protect and heal themselves and to pay tribute to the gods.

As man discovered more and more minerals and metals, and societies evolved to monarchistic societies of divine intervention and a greater role of the spirits and nature into general beliefs, these gems and metals became the objects of lore and legend.

Some of these minerals were very rare, and became a sign of wealth and status. For example, rubies, gold, diamonds, emeralds and other gems became synonymous with the power and prestige of the wearer.

Norse

With the new designation of gems less from a healing standpoint and more toward a status symbol, people began to commission artisans to construct beautiful settings for them such as in rings, necklaces, bracelets, and even powerful weapons. In fact, the Norse and early Anglicans believed gems were both ornamental and contained heavenly powers.

Modern Day

Today, jewelry can be found in all types of department stores and jewelry stores and they range in prices, but the status of real gold and large gems remain symbols of status, power, and creativity.   Schwanke-Kasten invites you to explore some of our fine jewelry collections on our Schwanke-Kasten website.
