Saint Christoper is a popular religious figure venerated by several Christian denominations. Placing him in a historical context is difficult, but the legends of St. Christoper are – nonetheless – quite popular and powerful. One of the most popular legends involve St. Christoper and a child. This child approached St. Christopher and asked him to help him cross a river. St. Christopher picked up the child and began to carry him across the river. As St. Christopher reached the halfway point the river rose and the child’s weight increased and became extremely heavy. St. Christopher barely made it to the other side.
St. Christopher asked the child why he was so heavy and the child explained that he was the Christ and when St. Christopher carried Him, he also carried the weight of the whole world on his shoulders. The child then vanished.
St. Christopher, whose name actually means “Christ-bearer,” is known as the patron saint of travelers. Images of him are worn around the neck, on a bracelet, carried in a pocket, or placed in vehicles by many Christians.
