Diamond Jewelry – Not From Coal

Diamonds come from carbon and are created when atoms of carbon form stable bonds in a three-dimensional crystalline structure.

Diamonds represents the hardest structure known to humans.  They are, in fact, extremely hard!  A ruby is a 9 on the Mohs scale and a diamond is a 10.  If the Mohs scale was proportional (rather than relational), a diamond would actually be over 10 times harder than a ruby (around a “40” on the 1-10 scale).

While often visualized as a clear gemstone, diamonds can actually display are variety of colors. Geologists discover diamonds, although rare,  in hues of red, yellow, blue, pink, , and green range in intensity from faint to vivid.  In fact, These naturally colored diamonds, known as fancy diamonds, are quite rare, and the more saturated the color, the higher the value.

Shady jewelers flood the diamond marketplace with synthetic and imitation diamonds (cubic zirconia, synthetic moissianite, colorless topaz, and colorless sapphire to name a few).  If you’re planning a significant purchase for a diamond consider obtaining some type of reputable diamond grading report.  At Schwanke Kasten Jewelers you can always be sure to find authentic, gorgeous diamonds.  Visit our Schwanke Kasten website to explore some of our current diamond offerings.
