Ancient Jewelry
Throughout modern history (AD 1000 +), our legends and lore have been filled with ancient jewelry. In fact, ancient civilizations believed amulets, talismans, and adornment were direct lines to the gods and heavens. As jewelry evolved and precious gems were discovered, their scarcity was attributed to this special connection. Mystics believed they held hidden powers to heal, strengthen, and bless.
Ancient Jewelry – Three Examples
Draupnir – The Ring of Odin, god of all Norse gods
Draupnir (that which drips) was a ring of gold held by the Norse god Odin. This ring was said to have the power of unlimited wealth – in the form of more gold rings! It was believed that this ring would multiply every 9th night when 8 more rings of equal size would drip from the original ring. This ring was said to have been made by two Dwarf twins as a gift to Odin.
The Ring of Dispel
The Lady of the Lake, commonly known as the entity which gave Arthur of Avalon his sword making him King Arthur of the Britons stole Lancelot when he was a baby and nursed him to boyhood when he went insane due to a curse placed on him. She then gave Lancelot the enchanted ring which would ward off all curses and spells against him.
Mayan Jade Forms
In ancient Mayan history the discovery of jade completely redesigned the way in which they saw the afterlife, the gods, and the connection between them and the Mayan people. Moreover, jade was said to be sent from the gods. Furthermore, Mayans revered jade for its healing, sacrificial and elitist properties. In fact, the Mayans believed those who wore jade held a high social status. The Mayans gifted jewelry to those who survived a sacrifice.
Throughout history, the power of Earthen minerals dictated the doctrine of gods and societies, and designated healers and royals. It seems there will always be a certain fascination – or even metaphysical connection – between minerals and those that wear them as jewelry.
